Her blood type is A, and according to Japanese tradition, type A is "cautious, considerate, helpful, responsible, peaceful, indecisive, restrains expression, has a good memory, is good at teamwork, prefers formalities and structures." Ulala's tarot affiliation is Star. Ulala, especially, is a perfect example of a reversed card at the beginning of the game. Hopeless, uninispired, unhappy, lacking direction in life...that's perfectly Star reversed.
Ulala's first persona is Callisto. Callisto (the name, incidentally, means "most beautiful") was a charming nymph and follower of Artemis. In honor of the goddess, Callisto took a vow to remain forever a maiden. However, this vow was abruptly violated when Zeus fell in love with the comely nymph. Clever Zeus assumed the form of either the god Apollo, or, in some versions of the tale, appeared as Artemis herself, and in one of these guises seduced Callisto.(What this means in the Persona universe...>D) Well, the upshot is that she was seduced and then dumped. In the myth, Callisto was turned into a bear by Artemis/Zeus/Hera (depending on who you ask) and her son by Zeus, Arcas, grew up to be a bear-hunter, and there was almost a big tragedy before Zeus took both mother and son and put them in the sky as the Great and Little Bear, Ursa Major and Minor. So Callisto is the Big Dipper. *laugh*
Callisto's spells: Magna, Poisma, Zan, Marin Karin, Magnus, Mafui
Ulala's ultimate persona is Asteria (it was romanized incorrectly in the official release; oh well. :D) Asteria was a Titan, the sister of Leto and mother of Hekate. Zeus chased her, and she turned into a quail to escape him, and finally she fell from the sky like a meteor (Asteria = the flaming one) and transformed into the island of Delos, where her sister Leto later gave birth to Apollo and Artemis. You can summon Asteria with the Material card Ortyx (that's the genus name of the American quail, if you're wondering!) that you pick up in Mt. Iwato.
Asteria's spells: Garudyne, Alluring Mazurka, Dreaming Needle, Me Patra, Twinkle Nebula, De Kaja Ulala is a Sagittarius. ( another description).

As you've probably read on Dolies' page, what Baofu calls Ulala in Parabellum is a "CD-onna." That's short for "Cash Dispenser Woman" - or someone who's easy to hit up for cash. Think a gullible sugar mommy. She picked up her "ciao!" saying from Maya. And apparently the first thing she does when she wakes up is check her Wang Long fortune on her cellphone...
Poor Ulala. Ulala, in a sense, is the Normal Woman in the party. Instead of being upbeat and surrounded by adoring guys, she doubts herself and her abilities, and isn't really sure what she wants to do with her life. She's terribly insecure and unhappy with herself, so she probably was attracted to Maya because Maya's so cheerful and optimistic. She loves Maya like a sister, but she can't help but resent that cheerful Maya doesn't seem to have any of the troubles or self-doubts that Ulala herself has.
Ulala, like Eikichi in Tsumi, has a very carefully constructed outer facade with dyed hair, the makeup (I bet it's pretty thick, even if it's well-applied), and the flashy clothes. She takes a lot of classes in wildly varying fields because she doesn't know what to do with herself and keeps trying out new things.
Q: What sort of job has Ulala been doing up until now?
A: She's doing sales for an underwear maker. She doesn't do door-to-door sales, instead she works at a department store receiving the wholesale merchandise before the customers get it.
She thought she really wanted to be a designer, but that's another thing she thought "Oooh, cool" about from image alone. "But I can't design anything, so I guess sales is okay," is kind of how she felt. Ulala just left things to run their course, since she didn't know what she wanted to do. She probably chose an underwear maker because it sounds like it's related to the apparel industry. It's a job that doesn't require any sort of design school degree, somehow or another it seems like the kind of work someone might be able to do by only losing two years in junior college.
Q: Are there a lot of things she's learning to do?
A: Yes, she's doing a variety of things. There's the flamenco that she does with Katsuya in their contact command, which is one of the special talents that she learned at culture school. Other things she is or has learned about are flowers, cooking, and other things that had a very bride-in-training feeling, so she also picked up tennis, diving, English conversation, and being a public health volunteer. In order to get revenge on Makimura, she is also learning boxing. So she kind of runs around from place to place with the feeling that she's got to be doing something. She gets impatient and tries out all different things, but in the end, she ends up even worse off, really not knowing what she wants to do.
Ulala is moved more by the anxiety of not doing something than because she is doing something new because she likes it. She feels like she's the only one left behind. For the time being, whenever she's doing something, she's able to forget about that. That's kind of why she keeps it up. But since her motives and goals are unknown, she always stops halfway through, and I don't think any of those things are useful to her in the end.
Ulala's main hangup is with men. She seems to attract all the wrong types, and she can't understand why. I guess since she thinks so little of herself, she's uses a boyfriend as a kind of self-esteem boost. She's friendly and outgoing and wants to take care of people, but despite that, she has real problems meeting the right kind of people, partially because she has a slightly skanky look and is naive about the people she likes. ;;^^ But you can tell that she's extremely kind at heart; as soon as Tatsuya declared that Katsuya wasn't his big brother, she started calling Katsuya "Suou-nii" - Big Brother Suou - to cheer him up. (Before that point, she'd just been calling him "Officer.") She's also the one who tries to talk to Tatsuya when he first joins their party, to make him feel welcomed.
Q: What is her history with men?
A: I think she's got a checkered history with men, but all of them were sort of the same kind of guy. She also falls in love easily...really, it's no good if she's not being held by someone. Ulala has strong hopes for marriage. Therefore, even if they haven't been seeing each other for very long at all, she'll bring out the discussion of marriage, and I think she's completely turned some guys off like that. Right now, she's registered at a marriage advice center, and she participates in an extremely high number of events such as the o-miai party (matchmaking party) at the beginning of Batsu. She sometimes invites Maya to come along with her, but Maya just wanders around eating at the parties. *laugh*
She also met Makimura at one of those parties, and probably assumed something like "he's my only hope". I'm sure that she's the type who assumes things a lot, compared to other people. She was also naive about money, and just handed it over to him freely. It's the kind of story she's probably heard many times, but this time she didn't notice what was going on because she was so enthralled with him. He'd say things like, "My father collapsed today, could I borrow some money..." and she'd roll along with any of his stories and was deceived. My thought is that she's probably given him around 3 million yen (about US$30,000!) by now. Personally, I don't think this is the first time she's been taken. Even if the guy wasn't quite a marriage con-artist, she's the giving type, so wherever she and her guy went out, Ulala would always pay...is how I think it was. I feel sorry for her. *sad smile*
Q: What is her relationship with her friends other than Maya?
A: I think she has a lot of friends, because she likes to take care of people. She probably goes out on a lot of group dates. *laugh* I think she also has a lot of male friends, but they never become any more of a relationship than that...
But, instead of going out drinking with her friends, she more often sits in her room alone complaing while she drinks. While eating salami or something. *laugh* She wants to complain about just about anything. These are the means by which she drinks, in a way. What she drinks is pretty strong, and I think she just sits there for a while drinking. She's the type who gets drunk quickly, and after that she just keeps drinking. Grumbling and drinking seems like such an old-man activity. *laugh* But Ulala has that sort of image...she also likes pachinko, after all. That might be why guys keep her at a distance. *laugh*
With all these issues, I kind of expected Ulala to have a truly messed up homelife, or at least something strange happening in her past. Hey, this is a Persona game, those things are par for the course! But apparently not...
Q: What is Ulala's home environment like?
A: Ulala is an only child, and her parents live at their house with her grandmother. Both of her parents probably work, and she spent a lot of time with her grandmother. They weren't exceptional or affluent or poor, just a very normal family. Their family relationship also wasn't bad at all. But, I don't think she has been returning to her parents' house much lately. When she goes home, she probably is asked, "Haven't you found anyone good yet?" I'm sure she can't tell them, "I did, but he took my money and ran away with it." *laugh*
She met Maya in high school, probably after Maya moved away from the Rengedai area. They became roommates right after high school. Although she's a year older than Maya, they were in the same class because Ulala got held back a year. ;;^^
Q: Why did she repeat a year in high school?
A: As you'd expect, it was her grades. She wasn't particularly a bad seed or a delinquent, so I'm sure that she probably just didn't have enough credits. I think she was probably just crazy about going out with guys and therefore she missed too many classes, or something like that.
At the end of the game, she seems to have come to terms with herself, and doesn't loathe herself quite as much anymore. She goes into business with Baofu, so maybe she's figured out a direction in life as well?
Q: What kind of job is she doing with Baofu?
A: They're working as mansearchers. Baofu probably handles the actual task requests, while Ulala communicates with the clients and takes care of the accounting. Well, other than that, she's the pushy one. Sort of half-intruding with enthusiasm, she goes to Baofu's place. Since his lair is gone, they're probably renting an office together and doing business from there. Baofu can't do wiretapping anymore, and since even if he could it would be meaningless, I think he probably thought, "Well, why not," or a similar feeling.
Right now, she is still living with Maya, but she and Baofu will start living together at some point while working together. But no matter what happens between Ulala and Baofu, they can't get married because he has no family register. But maybe someday, he'll suddenly get himself a completely different register. *laugh* He'll write "Baofu" in kanji on it or something. Or Baofu Tanaka. *laugh*
(Translator's note: I went and pulled out my textbook for the sake of accuracy here. All Japanese citizens have a family register. Each register lists a married couple, parents and children, and unmarried children, so a person's whole family history is available at a glance. Because these registries are so important, they are required in order for two people to get married. Obviously on Saga Kaoru's register, he has been registered as deceased, so he can't use that name. So, since he would be the head of the household and Ulala would take his name when they got married, he'd need a register. He could take citizenship in Japan and create a new register, but like Satomi joked, he'd need to come up with a last name. Anyway.)
"Baofu Tanaka" is funny because it's like "Baofu Smith." Tanaka is an extremely common, generic last name. *laugh*
Ulala, like Lisa, is skewed towards AGI. If you want to up her VIT stats, stick Priestess on her early on in the game.
