DAIROKUTENMAOU
(Japanese/Buddhist) The sixth heavenly demon king of Buddhism. This was the heavenly demon king that lived in the World of Pleasure. When Oda Nobunaga was seeking to destroy the immense influence of Buddhism and the Buddhist monks, he took on this particular name as a personal title, to shift the name's power and significance to a living person.
DAKINI
(Hindu) A yakshini (female yaksha) that was a follower of Kali that flew through the air (the name means "sky dancer"). She embodied some of the darker, Tantric aspects of Shakti (female divine energy). She was adopted into the Tibetan Buddhist pantheon, where she became a symbol of enlightenment and compassion. Somehow. In Chinese, dakini are known as K'ung-hsing fo-mu, cloud fairies. They are often portrayed with a white fox in Japan. (

DEMETER
(Greek) The goddess of grain and agriculture, and one of Zeus' siblings. She had a daughter named Kore (maiden) who was later known as Persephone. Her daughter was abducted by the god of the underworld, Hades, and while she hunted for her daughter, crops did not grow and the people starved. Finally she took pity on mankind and taught a pigherd how to sow grain and save crops for the winter. She got her daughter back, but only for half the year, so the earth was fruitful for half a year, barren for the other half. She was one of the subjects of the Elusinian Mysteries, a prominent Greek mystery religion. (

DOPPELGANGER
(German) A Doppelganger (Double-Walker, Double-Goer) was a person's spiritual double that accompanied them invisibly, occasionally helping the person, but also capable of causing harm (think of Jekyll and Hyde). If you actually
saw your doppelganger, you were probably about to die, and some people have seen doppelgangers right after a person's death. In Gothic literature, doppelgangers were not exact physical twins of the living person, but they often attached themselves to their twin and drove them mad. (

DURGA
(Hindu) One of the forms of the goddess Parvati. Durga came into being to kill the demon Mahisha, who had a boon that he could not be killed by god, man, or beast. Therefore, the gods created an 18-armed, heavily-armed *goddess* to kick his ass. Whoops. (

(Zoroastrian) In Zoroastrian teaching, "Druj" is the female incarnation of Lies, which is the opposite of holy Truth. 'Druj Nasu' is a spirit of pollution that can invade a corpse and is driven out at a funeral by ritual bathing of the corpse. (
