EPISODE 09: Sign of the Craft

A terrified man falls in flames off a skyscraper after encountering a creepy woman in the dark. Robin gets a midnight call from Amon to get her ass to the morgue, where they have the pleasant task of checking out the body. The person had been burnt to death, but he hadn't inhaled any smoke and nothing in his room was burnt. So it was more like he'd been flash-cooked. Amon and Robin saunter out, and when the coroner asks them if they aren't going to take the body, they turn and give him this hilarious matched scornful look.

Bitch, PLEASE.

Michael has identified the victim, the son of a chairman of a small company. There were three suspects, but two live too far away, leaving an automatic lone suspect. Amon and Robin look at the suspect - a girl - and Robin's a bit shocked that she would do something like this. Amon reminds Robin that even if she grew up in Italy, she was born in Japan and could have relatives here. (Ha, this is a hint that I didn't understand until the veiled conversation at the end of the episode.) Haruto and Karasuma are on their way to catch the suspect, so Amon and Robin join them. The suspect is Yoshioka Aki. At HQ, Michael and Doujima are researching her, and Doujima notices something strange.

Amon and Michael ring Aki's doorbell, and discover that the door's open and the latch is done up. In the bedroom, a huddled form is under the sheets; Aki's dead. Amon calls FACTORY, and Robin investigates a weird pile of sand on the ground and a password-locked laptop on the desk. Back at HQ, Michael cracks the password and finds a confession note ( to THREE murders) signed Yoshioka Aki. Robin tells Michael to quickly search for the other two people on the list.

On the road, a man is driving when a woman suddenly appears in the passenger seat. He gasps and swerves, crashing. At the crime scene, Amon is annoyed that they weren't able to prevent this. Robin points out that Aki's dead, and remembers the sand in Aki's room. (While Amon continues wanking, of course)

Someone is burning a politician's campaign posters that are plastered all over an underpass, giggling creepily. Her flames are pale bluish-white, unlike Robin's.

Robin realizes that all the random things in Aki's room (sand, a glass of water, a candle, etc) were some kind of mystical Feng Shui thing for Astral Projection, that is, the ability to project your soul out of your body. Amon tells Karasuma to scry the room.

Michael had investigated the three victims; they all did volunteer work at a domestic violence facility run by a politician named Aramune (the third victim). Interestingly, Aki was an intern there and the facility was suddenly shut down after an investigation. Karasuma was unable to sense anything in Aki's room, and this reminds Michael of the strange thing Doujima saw in the records. She found two people named Yoshioka Aki. Amon, who's a clever cookie, tells Michael to investigate every person who worked at the shelter, including those who are already dead. Then Amon tries to get in touch with the politician Aramune at his hotel, but he's denied an interview.

Aramune remembers a small girl accusing him (and the other two victims) of sending the children of the shelter overseas to contribute their organs to the black market, and when she got angry, she set the papers on his desk on fire. Meanwhile, Mysterious Woman has made a giant Ogham circle with sand in the parking garage under the hotel, and now Aramune sees the ghost of the small girl.

Michael basically confirms the whole black-market kidney ring story that Aramune was remembering, and reports a small fire that was detected recently. He gives Amon and Robin the coordinates. Aramune, for his part, is running for his life, and goes to the shelter, where he's trapped by the Mysterious Woman. Michael reports that Yoshioka Aki had a twin sister who "died," and as Robin and Amon drive up, they hear Aramune's screaming. Aramune is already dead in a sea of blue flames, and Aki attacks Amon, sending him flying. Robin and Aki battle with fire, and Aki's disturbed because she says only her twin had the same power as she did. She advances on Robin, but in her distraction she forgets about Angsty-Man in the background, who shoots her down with Orbo.

Identical twins, since they share the same genes, logically could share Craft abilities. Everyone wonders why they killed Aki, and Robin points out that Aramune was trying to get re-elected and would want to get rid of people who knew about his past. So Aki put her twin sister into a near-coma with her Craft to protect her. Robin's unhappy about this, but Karasuma points out that if they hadn't Hunted Aki now, she might have become a killer. Robin agrees reluctantly.

Amon reports to Zaizen that this Witch had knowledge of many esoteric rituals. Zaizen asks him if there's any connection to "her," and Amon says he couldn't find anything. Zaizen asks him if Amon's giving up so easily because of personal feelings, and Amon denies it before agreeing to search again.

"Three hundred and twenty years have passed since the coven sank in the dark. A covert mission. Revenge against an informer. Deception and remorse. Cursed blood pulls the redeemed soul back into the darkness."
