EPISODE 23: Sympathy for the devil

Doujima and Amon are talking in her parked car. Amon takes a look at the Piece of Wisdom, and they talk about SOLOMON and Zaizen's recent actions. Man, Amon got the Ugly Art for this episode. Doujima lets Amon know that Zaizen's planning to use only humans armed with Orbo for Witch Hunts, not the enhanced Hunters. Amon doesn't understand why SOLOMON would have a problem with that; it's not against SOLOMON's policy to phase out the use of Witch Hunters. He leaves Yurika to go check if FACTORY has started using the new Orbo, and Yurika sasses him a bit. Then she wonders what to do with Nagira, who's lying in the back seat. Nagira opens an eye and looks at her.

Robin sits in her room in Nagira's office, reading Toudou's diary. She discovers that the last set of pages has been ripped out.

Michael reports that there used to be genetic research conducted at SOLOMON several years ago. Miho says that wasn't unusual, many companies were doing that at the time. Michael counters that that's assuming SOLOMON had the same reason for the research as the other companies. SOLOMON was five years ahead of everyone else in the field, but they disbanded their project without ever announcing their research results, which is kind of fishy. Miho wonders why, and Haruto suggests that it had to do with Orbo. Miho then wonders if HQ attacked STN-J because they didn't like Orbo use - but what's wrong with Orbo? Nobody knows much about Orbo at all. Miho doesn't like the fact that they're using something that HQ would go so far to stop.

Hanamura yells at Robin to wake up, and asks where Nagira is, since he hasn't been back yet and a customer's coming soon. Nagira's informant is sitting in the pachinko parlor, but Nagira is AWOL. Amon walks down a hall with grocery bags, and finds Doujima and Nagira laughing together. Doujima says that Amon's big brother's a pretty fun guy, and leaves the two of them alone.

Research Gimp is talking with Zaizen. Apparently the problem with Orbo is that there's a personality mismatch between the test humans and the Witch's personality. Zaizen tells Research Gimp to continue the experiments to make Orbo safer.

Nagira asks if Amon's bitter about their father, but Amon says that he can't be bitter about someone who he's never seen. Then Nagira asks if Amon's mad that their father chose a Witch as his wife. Amon reveals that he had an angsty childhood as a Seed, and his mother's Witch powers awoke to protect her family, and she probably lost control and went mad, or something like that. So Amon's angry at Witches for screwing up his family, and because he's probably got the same Witch blood inside him. Nagira appears to be fully human, though, and he talks about how appearances don't really matter, Witch or Seed. Then Nagira asks Amon what he's going to do about Robin, and Amon says he's not sure, because the circumstances have changed. Robin's has a secret that SOLOMON is chasing her for, and he wants to know what that secret is before he Hunts her. Nagira warns Amon that Robin is stronger than he is, and Amon says he has to find out the truth anyways. Nagisa throws up his hands and says that he's transferring Robin back into Amon's care.

Amon drives off, and Nagira gets into Doujima's car, since she's basically hiding in the parking garage to follow Amon. They go together to FACTORY. Haruto leaves for the night, and Miho says she'll leave soon. Robin sits in her room with the diary, and she hears a knock at the door. It's Amon with a gun.

Nagira and Doujima stake out FACTORY, and Robin tries to talk to Amon, asking him if he thinks she's a Witch. Amon says that Father Juliano, the man who raised Robin, was the one who ordered her Hunt. Robin can't believe it, but Amon takes out an airmail letter that Robin recognizes from her mailbox on the night of the attack on her. (Part of being an effective leader and Witch Hunter is reading your subordinates' mail!) She asks if she can read it, and Amon gives it to her. Apparently it's a confession and apology to Robin from Juliano, and Robin realizes that for some reason Juliano was afraid of her. The letter also confused Amon - why would someone who would write a loving letter like this order her Hunt? To find out, Amon deliberately laid a trail for Robin to find him, using her past - Toudou. Robin gives up and says that if Amon truly thinks that she's a dangerous Witch, he's welcome to shoot her. Amon, of course, wusses out, lowers his gun, and says that this is his "answer".

Doujima calls Amon and says that FACTORY vans are on the move. Amon relates this to Robin and asks her if she's coming, and she smiles. Doujima is trailing the vans with Nagira, saying that they're chasing someone on a motorcycle...who turns out to be Sasaki! Doujima drives up and fires, but only when Robin arrives with her firepower does it become more even a fight. Robin's fire makes the Orbo react, which causes the FACTORY goons to grab their heads and stagger around as if in pain. The FACTORY goons suddenly flee, and Amon orders Robin to let them escape. Doujima runs to attend the pissed-off Haruto, and Nagira says hi to Robin. They all wonder why FACTORY is attacking Hunters, and Amon asks where Karasuma Miho was. (cue cymbal crash, threatening music!) Haruto says she was leaving right after him, and Miho leaves STN-J, hitching a ride with Zaizen. Oh no! Miho's in peril! Michael, alone in the building, stares at his ringing phone...

"Three hundred and twenty years have passed since the coven sank in the dark. A broken shell. A forbidden power. A prisoner. The name of the sacred mother brings back an carved in the darkness."
