THE AMAKURA FAMILY
天倉家

Ama: heaven :: Kura: storehouse/treasury

The Amakura family lived near the Lost Village when the girls were young, and the two girls played in the forest often. When they were running through the forest, Mayu slipped and fell down a hill, permanently injuring her leg and giving her a limp. Ever since then, Mio has felt responsible for her older sister and promised to always stay with her.

* AMAKURA MIO ( 天倉 澪 )
"Mio" means "water channel" but the kanji itself is made of "零" (zero - like the name of the game) plus the radical for "water," which is why I think that name was picked.
Mio, the heroine of the game, is the bolder, physically stronger of the two twins. She feels that it was her fault that Mayu got injured when they were kids, so she takes care of her older sister. She's not very psychic initially (although she can see and feel ghosts if they directly touch her) but the longer she uses the Camera Obscura, the more she sees. The ghosts of the lost village chase her because she reminds them of Kurosawa Yae, the twin priestess who ran away.

* AMAKURA MAYU ( 天倉 繭 )
"Mayu" means "cocoon." If you look at the kanji closely, it contains the radicals for "insect" and "thread," which makes sense!
Mio's older twin sister, a quiet, withdrawn...oh, who are we kidding, she's a gimp who gets possessed at the drop of a hat and limps off into the heart of danger. She relies heavily on Mio to rescue her when she gets into trouble, and may still resent Mio a little for "causing" her accident when they were kids. Mayu makes an excellent ghost-magnet when Mio can actually get her to stay with her; Mio can just back off and photograph the ghost as it attacks her sister. This is because Mayu is extremely psychic and can see both ghosts and visions of the past. She tends to get possessed by the spirits of Kurosawa Sae, the twin priestess who was left behind.

* AMAKURA MISAO ( 天倉 操 )
"Misao" means chastity or purity.
Mio and Mayu's father, who lived with his family near All Gods' Village. The twins were told by their mother that their father had passed away when they were small, but the truth is that he disappeared near the edge of the Lost Village and was never seen again. Incidentally, before he married and changed his last name to "Amakura," his name was Asou Misao. Yes, he was a relative/descendant of the man who built the Camera Obscura, Dr. Asou Kunihiko. Perhaps this was the reason he was fated to wander the Lost Village...?

* AMAKURA SHIZUKA ( 天倉 静 )
"Shizuka" means "quiet."
Not much is said about her, except that her husband disappeared and presumably she and the girls moved away from that area soon afterwards.
