 | | THE FOLKLORISTS Being a folklorist in a Fatal Frame game is like having a bulls-eye on your chest. | MAKABE SEIJIROU ( 真壁 清次郎 ) Ma: truth :: Kabe: wall :: Sei: purify/cleanse Jirou: common male name ending - "next son" A folklorist who was perhaps a little bit too involved in his work. He heard rumors about forbidden folk rituals being performed in All Gods' Village, so he traveled there with his assistant, Munakata, to document the events. He took a prototype Camera Obscura that had been made by his friend Dr. Asou, since it was supposed to take pictures of "things that weren't really there." He was imprisoned by the Ceremony Master of the Kurosawa House, and through his research he discovered that he was going to be tortured and sacrificed to the Abyss while the twin girls were being purified for their ritual. But, strangely, he didn't mind this; he was excited to be witnessing these rituals firsthand and able to look into the Abyss with his own two eyes. (Weird.) He was subjected to the cutting ritual and was tossed into the Abyss, still alive. But when Sae's ritual failed, he returned as a corrupted spirit, and helped Sae slaughter the entire village. He tends to haunt the Great Hall (where the massacre occured) and the underground site of the Strangling Ritual.
| | MUNAKATA RYOUZOU ( 宗方 良蔵 ) Makabe's assistant, who appears to have lived in the area of All Gods' Village when he was a child. Ten years ago, he met Itsuki and Mutsuki and befriended them, so he had a general idea that some ritual was performed in the village. Itsuki wrote him right before the Tachibana ritual and asked him to take care of Yae and Sae Kurosawa if they managed to escape the village. But when Munakata and Makabe reached the village, Itsuki and Mutsuki had suspiciously "died of an illness." He was urged by both Makabe and Yae to leave the village immediately (to avoid being made a Kusabi), and he promised to return for the girls on the day of their ceremony. But when he came back, the village had disappeared and only Yae was left. He eventually married Yae and continued researching these forbidden rituals, and he was killed in Himuro Mansion some years later while researching the Rope Shrine Maidens. He is Miku and Mafuyu's great-great-grandfather.
| | ASOU KUNIHIKO ( 麻生 邦彦 ) An eccentric scientist and inventor who built the Camera Obscura, a mechanical device with the ability to record (and exorcise) supernatural phenomena. He was shunned by the scientific community, but he was friends with Dr. Makabe, and lent him the (prototype?) Camera to use in his research. Dr. Asou was an ancestor or relative of Mio and Mayu's father.

THE SURVEYOR AND HIS GIRLFRIEND
| MAKIMURA MASAMI ( 槙村 真澄 ) A geological surveyor who was taking measurements of the area for the construction of a dam. He disappeared into the village and discovered that he couldn't escape. He was joined by his girlfriend Miyako, and together they investigated the village for several days, trying to find a way out. Deciding that the way out might be in the Kurosawa house, he left Miyako behind in the Osaka house and went alone to the Kurosawa house, where he was killed by the wandering ghost of the Kusabi. Makimura's ghost went back to the Osaka house, where Miyako was waiting, and, quote, "pulled his beloved after him into the other world." That's a poetic way of saying that he strangled her.

| SUDOU MIYAKO ( 須堂 美也子 ) Makimura's devoted girlfriend who followed him into the Lost Village. After several days, exhausted, she decided to wait for him in the Osaka house, and left notes for him to find her. She became increasingly agitated, and started seeing more and more flashes of the past. Finally, Makimura's angry ghost returned from the Kurosawa house and strangled her, and all she could do was ask him, 'Why?'
