THE KUROSAWA FAMILY
•āV‰Æ

Kuro: black :: Sawa: swamp

The Kurosawa family lived in the largest house overlooking a lake. They acted as priests and overseers for the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual. All the other families in the village were branches of the Kurosawa family.

* KUROSAWA YAE ( •āV@”Šd )
"Yae" is "eightfold," perhaps a Buddhist reference?
The older twin shrine maiden from the Kurosawa family. She seems to have been more assertive than her twin sister Sae, based on her entries in the diary they shared. Itsuki encouraged her to escape the village with her sister, and went so far to get them the necessary keys and distract the villagers. But as she and Sae ran through the woods, Sae slipped and injured her leg. Yae kept running and managed to escape the village. When she tried to head back to look for her sister, she found that the village had disappeared and she couldn't return. Somehow (conveniently) she lost her memory from the shock (I guess she's a "Remaining" in that sense; her sister did die) and when Munakata Ryouzou returned he found her crying at the remaining gate to the village. He took her home and eventually married her, and she became Munakata Yae from Fatal Frame 1 (so she's Miku and Mafuyu's great-great-grandmother. They have Weird in the blood.)

* KUROSAWA SAE ( •āV@ŽŅd )
"Sae" means "piled gossamer" or "heavy gossamer" - the second character is the same as in her sister's, but characters can mean a great many things and I'm trying to go for a combined meaning that makes a little sense, as pointless an endeavor as that may be.
Sae is Yae's younger sister, and seems as dependent upon her as Mayu is on Mio. She didn't want to run away, but went along with it because Yae insisted. When she and Yae attempted to escape from the village, she slipped and fell (again, like Mayu) and was captured by the pursuing villagers. She was brought back to the village, where she learned that Itsuki had been imprisoned and had already killed himself. She thought that it was "their fault" for having escaped (although evidence indicates that he would have committed suicide anyways) and agreed to go through the ceremony alone. She was hung and then her body was thrown in the Abyss, but it wasn't enough and the Repentance occured. She and the Kusabi returned from the Abyss and slaughtered all the villagers in the Great Hall of the Kurosawa house. The darkness of the Repentance killed or drove everyone else mad, and the survivors killed each other. She blamed Yae for not returning to do the ceremony properly and for leaving her behind, and so she waits in the village for her sister's return. So...she'll kill Yae for not killing her. The logic of these shrine maidens is a bit weird at times.
She tends to possess Mayu (who's psychic and very similar to her), and tries to kill/tempt Mio (who is like her sister Yae).

* KUROSAWA RYOUKAN ( •āV@—Įа )
"Ryou" means good, and "kan" is generosity.
Yae and Sae's father, the Ceremony Master for the Forbidden Ritual. Many years ago, he himself had killed his twin brother in a Ritual and was now a Remaining. He understood and sympathized with the pain his daughters would go through, and wished that it didn't have to be this way, but it was the duty of the twins born in that village to go through the ceremony and keep the gates of Hell closed. When Itsuki and Mutsuki's ritual failed, he decided to perform the Hidden Ceremony and imprisoned Dr. Makabe for that purpose, while preparing his own daughters to complete the full ritual. He oversaw the Hidden Ceremony and sacrificed the Kusabi to the Abyss, but then the Shrine Maidens tried to escape. When Yae could not be found, he tried to complete the ceremony anyways by hanging his remaining daughter, but he was also presumably killed by the Malice that escaped the Abyss.
